Dusty Memories

When my daughter was young and before there were digital cameras, I would collect photos of all the places we visited that year and of all the fun we had. Then, I would compile all these photos into a photo album and present it to her Christmas morning as one of her gifts. We would always open it last and look through the pictures and laugh about the places we visited and the people we hung out with. I still have those photo albums and one day will revisit the places and dusty memories with my grandchildren.

One of my best friends from high school was Alice. I loved going to her mom and dad‘s house because every wall was filled with family photos from generations past and present. Those photos now fill the walls of Alice and her son's homes and is a legacy for her grandchildren.

"I remember the days of long ago;

I meditate on all your works and

consider what your hands have done."

Psalm 143:5

Do you have photos as part of your legacy? Do you have anything that you can hand down to your children that speaks of your childhood or the childhood of your parents or grandparents? I am saddened because when my mother passed away, her home was cleared out and all the photos of my youth were thrown in the trash. I can never show my grandchildren who I was before they were born.

I find that the only photos people are keeping are the ones collected on their cell phones or that they post on social media. It seems no one prints and keeps photos anymore. It appears that the family photo wall has lost its significance with the families of today.

In the world of technology that we live in today, it appears that we live so much in the moment that we are not living at all in remembrance of our past. There’s a saying that if we do not remember the mistakes of history we are bound to repeat them. But, if we don't remember our past and the experiences are not captured for the next generation, we will all but be lost and our legacy will end like dust in the wind.

Lyrics-Dust in the wind by Kansas

I close my eyes

Only for a moment and the moment's gone

All my dreams

Pass before my eyes with curiosity

Dust in the wind

All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song

Just a drop of water in an endless sea

All we do

Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind

Oh, ho, ho

Now don't hang on

Nothin' last forever but the earth and sky

It slips away

And all your money won't another minute buy

Dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind

(All we are is dust in the wind)

Dust in the wind

(Everything is dust in the wind)

Everything is dust in the wind

(In the wind)
