A friend and I were talking about how society is becoming so violent, even while there is less and less accountability for one's actions. She was expressing frustration that people are becoming more aggressive, more angry, more assaultive, and less capable to handle day-to-day challenges. In frustration my friend said they should, "Stop being a snowflake (melting at any challenge) and suck it up buttercup!"
I considered her words and they crashed in on my consciousness as I watched the news report on murders, suicides, sex scandals, and other negative commentaries. I turned to Facebook seeking some kindness in the world and saw a college boy maliciously trip an unsuspecting girl from behind and then stomp on her while his friends laughed and videotaped the assault. I then was referred to a Christian article by author Leslie Vernick listing "5 Indicators of an Evil Heart, (https://www.crosswalk.com/slideshows/5-indicators-of-an-evil-heart.html?p=1). So I picked up my AAA Westways magazine (October 2017) and read an article by Jim Benning (illustration above by Lonnie Busch) called "Higher Education" and how marijuana use has "doubled" the percentage of fatal car crashes in Washington state since legalizing marijuana in 2012 (2013-2014 study). Monday, a suicide bomber entered the New York City subway and detonated the bomb strapped to his body injuring several innocent commuters.
I would have to say, reluctantly, that I agree with my friend's perspective that things have gone seriously wrong and there is no lack of evidence to support the fact that there is an increase of violence in our society. It appears that overall there is a lack of love in the world.
It is for this reason (and a reminder during this season of Christmas), that we do what we can to keep love in our hearts, hope-filled prayers on our lips, and forgiveness on the forefront of our minds.
