I remember as a child, swimming at the beach and being pulled out toward the depths of the ocean by the unseen undercurrent. As fear gripped me, I panicked and swam frantically toward the shore in an effort to reach safety. The harder I swam, the more I found myself drifting further toward the opposite direction of my family who did not even know my dilemma. I could feel the strength leaving me as my struggle began to decrease in intensity and I all but gave up hope of seeing another day. Just as the waves were about to wash over me, something miraculous happened. I noticed that when I quit fighting the current and let it carry me, I moved closer to the shore. I began swimming with the current and by resisting the urge to fight the current, giving in actually brought me closer to safety. Moments later, I was standing on the shore, tired, but safe.
Life can be like that as well. There are unseen challenges that can exhaust us as we struggle against the consequences of our choices, our thoughts, and our behaviors. Resistance to change can create more challenges that make us feel overwhelmed and fearful of crashing upon the rocks of our existence.
"He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might
he increases strength."
Isaiah 40:29 (ESV)
Letting go of our need for acceptance, validation, and control is challenging. We want to be accepted by those we love, to have our hurts and fears validated, and control others when they don't meet our expectations. We struggle in our relationships until we give up hope and stop resisting, and often we discover that in letting go of those expectations we can find ourselves being carried toward healing, health, and safety that leads to peace.
What do you need to let go of today?
