My Miracle

My youth was filled with pain and uncertainty. I had big dreams that were crushed by my reality. I looked at life through the lens of television of missed opportunities and love that I yearned for and thought I'd never find. Then a miracle happened--and her name is Christina (pictured on her pony).

I remember the day I drove to the OBGYN's office for my first ultrasound appointment. I was 29 and in an abusive marriage. I wondered how I was blessed to have the opportunity to be a mom and at the same time, the thought of being a single parent terrified me. Alone with the nurse, she smiled and asked if I wanted to know the sex of the baby. I wanted a baby girl with every ounce of my being, but not wanting to tempt fate, I said I'd be happy no matter the sex. The nurse again smiled even more broadly and asked again, "I know with 100 percent certainty what the sex is." The temptation was too much and I gave in. Driving home from the doctor's office I was dancing in my seat, raising my hands, clapping, singing and praising God because I was going to have a baby girl.

All of my 30's and 40's she was the light in my otherwise dark world. She freely gave me hugs and kisses and said multiple times a day, "I love you mommy!" I knew I could do anything and she energized me through rough and challenging times of my life. There were good times, and times of great difficulty that we both endured through. I have so many regrets of moments where I lost my temper, or moments when I didn't give her what she couldn't ask for. Those memories still find me in the middle of the night when I miss her most. She is married now and recently gave birth to their 5th little miracle.

Many people take their little miracles for granted while looking for tangle miracles in lottery tickets, Las Vegas, relationships, or work. Don't look outside of your family, your children, or your loved ones for your miracle. God gifted you with these precious miracles of life.

3 "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."

Psalm 127:3-5 (NIV)

Embrace them, snuggle them, hold them, and love them. Every day of the year, not just on Valentine's day.
