A Quinnipiac University (Hamden, Connecticut) poll released Tuesday asked Americans what they would do “if they were in the same position as Ukrainians are now: stay and fight or leave the country?” A majority 55% say they would “stay and fight,” while 38% say they would leave the country, according to the poll.
I have one question...where would the 38% go and how would they get there?
America has always been the nation other nation's people ran to. Our Lady Liberty has always been the symbol of freedom that has welcomed those running from tyranny. Anyone who has traveled outside of the USA gains an appreciation for the freedoms American's have. Those who have never left our boarders have no idea of how lucky they are to live in this nation.
The older you are the more you appreciate the blessings we enjoy because you know what it is to not have them. Those who only know what they are told have no firsthand knowledge of the struggle's other nations face. It's why our boarders are being flooded with refugees running INTO America, not from it.
Who is Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, and why is he so willing to stand his ground and fight against the Russian assault on his country? He is a man determined to fight for what he believes in, even if it means a fight to the death. He has everything to lose if he leaves. I can't imagine the pressure he feels as he stands to fight for the nation he loves. I heard that 80% of those who left have returned to stand and fight with him. I pray their fight is not in vain.
When people have something to lose, they are more willing to fight to save it.
When people invest in a life they worked hard to create, they take pride in the success they have achieved. A person who has built up a business from a dream takes pride in their accomplishments. Someone who has worked hard to gain the knowledge and expertise to be the top in their field will work hard to retain their standing as long as they can. When a professional athlete reaches the pinnacle of their profession they don't easily walk away because it is all they know. For most people who have struggled to obtain a home, a career, a profession, a lifestyle, it's very hard to just walk away because they know to walk away means starting over again from nothing.
Those who have nothing to lose will feel no loss when they walk away.
I am encouraged by the brave men, women, and children of Ukraine who are fighting against the powers of evil. They are standing for truth, and I ache that they are forced into this situation. I pray that good overcomes evil and that the European nations stand in unity against Russia. I fear that Taiwan and South Korea are next. Are we on the brink of World War III, and are we a nation walking in ignorance which makes us vulnerable? Will we be next and if we find ourselves at war what will you do? Stand and fight, or run away?
I want to be the light in the darkness, love in the midst of hate, grateful for the challenges, to rise up when others shrink away, and to not fear death nor the thought of living, and so I shall.
